CAN stands for Communities Action Network. It is a collaborative community effort mobilizing citizens toward achieving total health and wellness.

The Johnson County CAN Coalition members include all residents from the county and individuals from the following 12 sectors:

Youth
Parents
Schools
Law Enforcement
Health Care
Media
Businesses
Youth Servicing Agencies
Volunteer Organizations
Faith Based Organizations
Government-City and County
Civic Organizations

It is important to have all sectors involved in the coalition efforts. Having important community organizations and individuals involved is vital to the effectiveness of the strategies. The 12 sectors function as a bridge between the coalition and external resources and important stakeholders in the community.

Coalition Goals

Goal 1:

To reduce substance abuse among youth, and over time adults, by addressing the factors that increase the risk of substance abuse and promote factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.

Goal 2:

To establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, private non-profit agencies and federal, state, tribal, and local governments to support the efforts of Johnson County CAN to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.

Coalition History

The Coalition began meeting in October of 2005 and formalized in November of 2006. The coalition has continued to meet monthly to address data driven substance abuse prevention needs, as well as other related needs. The coalition continues to seek funding to address those needs by implementing individual and environmental strategies.

The Johnson County CAN Coalition is part of the Region V Systems Prevention Coordination System. Region V Systems provides technical assistance to all sixteen county prevention coalitions.

County Assessment

Young people are consuming alcohol at high rates and it increases greatly between 8th and 12th grade.
Young people are driving after drinking alcohol and are a passenger with a drinking driver.
Youth in Johnson County have easy access to alcohol.
The majority of young people feel that laws and norms favor drug use.
A high percentage of young people are obtaining and consuming alcohol with one or more adults present.
Youth perceive underage drinking as a low risk of harm.
An increasing number of youth are binge drinking.
A high percentage of youth are using tobacco, smoking and chewing, during class.
